A few interesting and typical reactions of chlorine are demonstrated. Chlorine is reacted with two metals (sodium and iron) and with a non-metal (phosphorus) to form the corresponding chlorides, and it is used to reduce bromide and iodide in aqueous solution. Lastly, the bleaching power of the gas is tested on the pigments of a fresh flower.

  • Is it possible that at 4:19, where SO4^2- + 2X^- + 2H^+ ... the 2 'X' atoms with negative 'charge' can react with the 2 positive hidrogen atoms stabilizing? Or this is like a final `stable' result, in which the elements won't react in their current medium?

  • @ConTroLLFlubber

No, actually the reaction of H+ and X- to give HX does not occur because HX (all except HF) are strong acids and are completely dissociated in water.

  • Awesome! :)

What's that music playing in the vid btw?

  • @Cuperdon

Thanks! The track is "Simian Acres" from Blast Corps OST.

  • Beautiful. Helped me with my chemistry homework...but the music mentally scarred me.

  • very bad laboratory safety.

  • I wish I had that much chlorine... this is really cool! I definitely want to play with iodine and bromine, now... :P That is, after I play with antimony.

  • @Hegelrast Thank you very much for spreading the knowledge. Great video though I am still learning.

  • awesome
