I am one of those people who believe the spoken word in song is the most important part.

The commercial mass-produced rap today absolutely disgusts me. What used to be catchy intelligent songs about the poverty and equality and crime black people in the US face (who invented it) has today turned to fake gangster rappers who embrace and brag about crime essentially doing the opposite to what true hip hop was meant to be.

rap is a spoken-word kind of music while hip-hop is a bigger genre of music that encompasses rap. Hip-hop isn't limited to rap, but rap is limited to hip-hop. As for what you define hip-hop as... that's a little harder for me to explain, but its heavily based on R&B and Funk with and beats are a more prominent part of the music. In early hip-hop, the lyrics were the most important part of the song, some people argue it still is
