This is a great WWII movie about American airmen in a POW camp during WWII. Stalag 17, this is what spwaned the great show Hogan’s Heroes, is at first a black comedy of sorts then changes to a bit of action as the men try to find the spy in there ranks and to save a Lieutenant Dunbar from the SS. This movie shows what life was really like for the POWs in Stalags all over during the War. While some of this many not be true, like any other war film, this is taken from personal experence. Also this is one of the all time greats of the POW movies, it’s ranked up there along with The Great Escape and The Bridge on the River Kwai, among the greatest World War II Prisoner of War films.

This movie stars: William Holden, Don Taylor, Otto Preminger, Robert Strauss, Harvey Lembeck and others

The movie was made/released in 1953, but the Broadway play was going in 1951.

This movie was adapted by Billy Wilder and Edwin Blum from the Broadway play by Donald Bevan and Edmund Trzcinski, who themselfs both were POWs during WWII.

  • Such an awesome movie, I love the kommandant's reaction, it looks like he smiles then when he flips the body over he notices it was the spy, classic.

Such a great movie, I also loved the part at the end when he was whistling

  • Hogan's Heroes took ideas from Stalag 17. There was a lawsuit over it I believe.

  • @keyserheel No i ''get it'',but i just thought some of those animal and shapiro scenes were too silly.I still like the movie alot.

The movie is a classic, and it's a comedy....the more you watch it the better it gets, I think they did pretty dang good for the time period as comedy back then wasn't what we see today and takes a special sense of humor to really 'get it'...sorry if I came off as obtuse...

  • @keyserheel But i think there was enough humor with the sefton character.Im not saying everything they did was bad,but some of those scenes are just cringeworthy.Mainly the painting the road scene, and animal thinking he's going blind.Been a while since i saw the film, but those two scenes really stick out.Even at 10 years old seeing it in the mid 80's,i thought they were completely unfunny.

You do realize this was made in the 1950's and was par for the course for the time period....you'd have to be some kind of stick in the mud to not 'get it'....

    I bet you're a riot at parties.

  • This movie could have been great, but the animal and shapiro characters ruin it.Their humor is horribly dated, and flat out embarrassing.Holden was great, and if the film was edited,it could be the classic it claims to be.But the animal and shapiro characters have to be edited out quite a bit.

  • Outstanding film, thanks for the download.

  • Thank You for putting this on You Tube great movie the best

  • this a great movie coming from independent i saw this movie in the early sixties

  • When they talk about old movies made as art to last forever Stalag 17 is one example.

  • @heidemarie89 Good Too Know,but I'm glad it didn't work for him!! ( BTW,I can count to a Hundred in German,But I doubt that would've worked either!!)
