Testing the recently repaired air operated shutters on the first Fairbanks-Morse H10-44; Milwaukee Road 760. Each set of shutters is operated by an air cylinder (one of which was rebuilt) and opens automatically when the engine gets to a certain temperature. Some of the linkage was completely frozen and other pieces were missing before we started work on these. The unit was in the diesel shop at the Illinois Railway Museum receiving its yearly inspection.
That's interesting. i worked with H12-44s. They had a valve inside the door on the nose above your head that worked the shutters and fan. wish ours was in that location. when you turned the valve you had to have someone holding the door. If it shut it was hell to get back out if it shut, but maybe that was because I was only 12 or 13.

Interesting video, I am trying to rebuild the air cylinder for the shutters on my truck, the return spring is broken. Do you have any contact information for the parts that you used in your rebuild?
