James Kalm foregoes the bicycle to make a special road-trip to Newark New Jersey to visit the debut exhibition of German Pitre. Using the abject materials of faux fur, stuffed animals and black tar-like paint, Pitre presents work that challenges good taste while extending the classic painterly legacy. Working on a large scale and attaching objects to the canvas surface, the artist comingles the cuddly with the crappy and produces work that resonates with a pathetic awareness of unavoidable decay and enveloping entropy. Featuring an interview with German Pitre.

  • Hey James,

Do you happen to know what has become of the NY Painter blog? I haven't seen an update for many many months. Can you recommend another blog (besides your own) that deals with painting in NY?

  • Attention musiqueconcrete123,

You can check out my column titled Virtually Overwhelmed in the Sep. Brooklyn Rail for comments regarding PaintersNYC. The blog mistress is having a show opening tomorrow, so shes been busy. Hope to have a Kalm Report documenting it up soon. Unfortunately not many people interested in the grief. Feel free to comment here.

    JK

  • James,

I found the Rail article, thanks for directing me to it. I think your point about painterparazzi (if that is how she really prefers to be known!) perhaps intentionally ignoring the blog might be true. How difficult could it be to post a new image every once in a while, even if you are preparing for a new show? There is one poster in particular on that blog named "Zipthwung" who despite being pretty brilliant at times, completely overwhelms things!

  • I wouldnt make any judgments about how hard it is. These things (blogs) can take over your life, and theres no money. Basically, your devoting your life to charity, and getting nothing but crap for your efforts. JK

  • Ahh yes, well that is basically the life of an artist, isn't it? Or any creative endeavor, really. Even the 'successful" artists I know don't seem especially satisfied. I wasn't passing judgment on the difficulty of maintaining her blog - I just really miss reading it! BTW, I am really glad you here doing what you are doing, and judging from your audience, I'm not the only one. Keep up the good work, and good luck with your painting too. When do we get to see it??

  • Check out the lorenmunk link on the home page at this channel,

    JL

  • One more thing - can you tell us something about that 'Einstein' guy that has been going to practically every opening in NYC for a number of years? I have a feeling you might be the one to ask. I'd ask him myself but...

  • Well well, it's all starting to make sense now (sort of). Certainly I have seen your work at Pierogi before. Or perhaps elsewhere in Williamsburg. You Rock, on all counts.

  • your the best mr. kalm:)my favourite internet ghost:)

  • The one he was standing next to kind of reminded me of Jasper John's early works. Fantastic work.
