*CAUTION* - The birth of a stillborn kitten is in this video.
Here's my cat Lilly giving birth to 4 babies, although one is stillborn :( and one wasn't caught on video. Lilly is an exotic shorthair/selkirk rex mix and she was bred to a siamese/ragdoll mix. Although one baby didn't make it, the other 3 are great!
This particular cat loved having the other animals around to help her out with her babies. She even allowed them, and my small dog, to lay with the kittens and clean them. Some persians/himalayans/exotics that I have had were like this and appreciated the help from the other animals, while others were not like this at all!
Some females needed to be touched and talked to during labor and delivery while others pretty much would rip my head off if i got too close :p
I did not move Lilly into her room right away because I was waiting for her to finish birthing her first baby, it happened very fast. For some of the cats I would keep them in a closed room, never in a cage, with me. Lilly was the type of cat who seemed to appreciate the other animals, and me, around.
If you are a breeder and know your cats well you should have a good idea on how to approach the labors and deliveries.
Sometimes though you get surprised and shocked at how the moms react. Lilly's mom was quite different and would need to bite down on something when a kitten was coming out. She chose a kitten once and the kitten was killed. I had to take away any other kittens that were born until she was all done, and supply her with something ELSE to bite down on... From that day I always took away kittens, from any mom, until they were all done..
Another, unrelated female, had 7 kittens. Laid on a few for too long and killed them. But then turned on the entire rest of her litter and started to attack them. I was only able to save two with continuous hand feedings. And just to make this clear - these cats were in their own rooms with no other animals around.
A few cats would get onto my lap while they were pushing...wanting to be as close to me as possible.
They're all different.
