The Black and Tan are the English soldiers that were brought in as an answer to the IRA's activities. The black and tan refers to their tan uniform, lined in black and black berets. Both sides made a brutal fight, the Black and Tans using authority of England to brutalize the Irish supporters of the IRA.

These were not popular soldiers. Often thought of scum and prisoners given pardon to fight in Ireland. To this day they're seen in dismay.

No doubt the B and T were scum. But for balance it needs to be remembered how often the Irish people were betrayed by their own. Look at the drug gangs, the rich, the banks and the bishops today!!

My 93 year old grandmother who died twenty years ago remembered these men and all she would say about them is that it was a black veil over Ireland. Their cruelty to women and children was dreadful and dreaded.
