A compilation of footage taken from a television documentary starting with footage of the tsunami and ending with an analysis of what happened using a model.

Please take a look at Video History Today http://www.videohistorytoday.com , the first web site to offer unique collections of re-usable original video clips designed for teachers and students.

The idea behind Video History Today is to give schools the raw material to make mini-documentaries and video essays on historical subjects.

Initial packages focus on World War I (Somme and Ieper areas), The Holocaust, the American Civil War and D-Day & Normandy 1944.

  • How bad was this earthquake and tsunami compared to the recent ones in Japan?

  • @ILovestorms The Japanese earthquake was a 9.0 magnitude quake (on the Moment Magnitude Scale MMS) . The 2004 Boxing Day Sumatran earthquake measured 9.1, the 2010 Chilean 8.8, the recent Christchurch one 6.3 and the Haitian one in 2010 7.0. As the MMS, which is a measure of the energy released in an earthquake, is a logarithmic scale an increase of one unit means a 32 times increase in the energy released. Think of a J shaped curve. I don't think you can measure/rate tsunamis.

  • how does a tsunami start??!!

  • @TheGLEEK14 Earthquakes, which is what happened here, a massive landslide perhaps (there is the possibility that a landslide on Tenerife could cause a tsunami which could cross the Atlantic and devestate the eastern seabord of the United States). I'm sure others could add more to that list.

The 2011 Japanese earthquake/tsunami death toll currently stands at around 14,500, which is no small beer. The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami killed 300,000 people by conservative estimates. It was the worst earthquake since the 1976 Tangshan quake that killed anywhere from 250,000 to 1 million people.

  • @TheGLEEK14 the earths techtonic plates move and colidewhich creates vibration

  • The last 2:15 mins wear most fascinating!

  • @TheGLEEK14 a tsunami can start by many things but mostly earthquakes however explosives and other things can cause it. In the Japan tsunami the seabed thrusted upwards causing a large amount of water to be displaced and brang to the top it gets more destructive as it reaches the coast because the waves are more larger and deadlier in shallow water hope this helped

  • @TheGLEEK14 A tsunami is usually caused by an earthquake. There is an uplift in the earths crust from 2 tectonic plates subducting one another. The pressure gets so great that one of the plates pushes up. This one occured under the ocean and so when the crust uplifted it displaced a large volume of water. Causing a ripple like affect that spreads outwards. This is why more than one country was affected. Hope this helps.

  • this is very interesting especially the end where they show you how a tsunami starts and look like.

  • @ARZCARDINALS lol thats cos thats how you say it in the UK ;-)
