Veronique Gens
From Nuit D'etoiles
Song Après un rêve
Après un rêve, Op. 7 no 1 by Gabriel Fauré
Roger Vignoles (Piano)
Written: 1877; France
Poem By Romain Bussine

In a sleep charmed by your image
I dreamed of happiness, fervent delusions;
your eyes were softer, your voice pure and full, you were as radiant as a ky lighted by dawn.

You called me, and I left the earth
to escape with you towards the light;
for us the skies half-opened their clouds, unknown splendours, divine glowings, half seen..

Alas! Alas! Sad wakening from dreams! I call upon you, O night give me back your illusions, return, return in your radiance, return O mysterious night!

Dans un sommeil que charmait ton image
Je rêvais le bonheur, ardent mirage;
Tes yeux étaient plus doux, ta voix pure et sonore
Tu rayonnais comme un ciel éclairé par l'aurore;
Tu m'appelais, et je quittais la terre
Pour m'enfuir avec toi vers la lumière;
Les cieux pour nous entr'ouvraient leurs nues;
Splendeurs inconnues, lueurs divines entrevues...
Hélas, hélas, triste réveil des songes !
Je t'apelle, ô nuit, rends-moi tes mensonges;
Reviens, reviens radieuse
Reviens, ô nuit mystérieuse

  • is off to BeauSejour in Guernsey to sing this very song this evening - Veronique gives one of the best interpretations

  • @ktmad That's exactly what I did. I'm second year now :)

  • Just found out that I have French-Canadian heritage and that my Grandmother used to always sing this song to lull my Aunts and Uncles to sleep. It's strange how I was practising this for my exam and one of my uncles just so happened to overhear, leading to my discovery. Just goes to show how music unites us all

  • @19Edurne You should listen to the Souzay performance here.
