it is one of the best rock'n'roll / blues songs ever!! i don't know who compared this song to rap (?!) cause in the time this song was written the funk was just starting to come together and no funk is not hip hop or red hot real funk is john scofield, james brown, and alot of other jazz musicions that did some funky stuff
LaPoPay I'am the one who came up with the comparison. The subject matter in this song is the reason why I came up with the idea that this song paved the way for today's gangsta rap.
Look. This is anything but "gangsta rap". This is a classic rock hit...even though it does describe a murder. But so do many country western and folk songs. That's just a part of life.
Yawnhockel Dick Clark had asked Price to change the lyrics to this hit because he felt it was "too violent" for white kids to listen to in the 60's.Rolling Stone mag did a series of issues five years ago '04 July dedicated to rock music and they had a list of the 500 best songs every made in their opinion and this song made the list and they had little stories about the songs and THE WORD CENSORSHIP was mentioned along with it.
Mmm, hmm. I don't doubt that there was obvious censorship of the song "Stagger Lee". The culture was different, and there was obvious racial bias. But I never denied that. I just said that this was a rock genre song, which even rolling stone classified it as. I only disagreed with you that this was gangsta rap. In terms of racial bias, I think we agree on that front.
