Cruiseship accident Costa Concordia The ship had set sail from Civitavecchia Costa Cruises and was directed to Savona, carrying about 4,200 passengers. He had a problem with the electric forced the crew to transfer all the occupants on the lifeboats in the direction of the neighboring island of Giglio

Rescuers early Monday found the body of a man in the wreckage of the luxury liner Costa Concordia, bringing to six the death toll after it ran aground off the island of Giglio, ANSA news agency said.

The rescuers from the fire brigade, who spent the night looking for around 15 missing people, found the body of a passenger wearing a lifevest on the second deck in the unsubmerged part of the huge vessel, ANSA said.

Costa Crociere, the owner of the luxury liner that ran aground off the coast of Italy, said Sunday its captain had made "errors of judgment" as the search continued for 17 missing.

The admission came hours after rescue teams brought two passengers and an injured crew member off the half-submerged Costa Concordia to safety, but recovered the bodies of two more victims.

"It seems that the commander made errors of judgment that had serious consequences," said a company statement, adding that he had not followed company procedures in his management of the emergency.

Prosecutors arrested Captain Francesco Schettino and first officer Ciro Ambrosio late Saturday.

The prosecutor leading the investigation, Francesco Verusio, told reporters Sunday that Schettino had left the stricken liner "well before" the last passengers were evacuated.

And coast guard officials said the captain ignored repeated requests from them to return to his ship as the rescue operation continued.

"The route followed by the ship was not the right one," Verusio said, accusing Schettino of having "approached Giglio island in a very clumsy manner."

Prosecutors have also said the crew mishandled the emergency, delaying the start of the evacuation until an hour after the accident.

Costa Crociere said it was co-operating with prosecutors in the probe.

  • @agarepci Most of the Crew member left the ship on the first Rescue-Boat. Cowards, nothing else. Not all, but a lot of.

  • This is a real Titanic experience of the 21st century. I did five years working on the cruise ship and I thanks God I did not experience anything like this. I will be terrified too. I salute all the crew members that knows what to do on those kinds of situation especially the Filipinos that checked the cabins just to make sure there was no more passenger inside the cabins. I am thankful that very few people died. It could have been worst. Its just a big loss of that beautiful cruise ship!
