From the 1967 La Scala recording of Verdi's Requiem. Conducted by the great Herbert von Karajan.

Apologies for a belated happy birthday to Mr. Luciano Pavarotti, who would have turned 73 years of age yesterday on 12 October 2008.

What can I say? This may be the most beautiful rendition of this piece I've ever heard. Yes, I prefer it to Bjoerling's *gasp* (No! The horror!).

Let's accept it, young Pavarotti's voice was electrifying. Whether it was or wasn't the greatest Italian lyric tenor voice is entirely opinion. But one thing is certain, it was the last.

I've often thought that Pavarotti was the tenor who was 'underrated because he was overrated'. Overrated by the masses, underrated by the opera fans. Just because he did crossover in those later years (when he should have been retired anyway), doesn't take from the fact that in his prime he had one of the most beautiful voices in the world.

  • Thank you for uploading this masterpiece.

The young Pavarotti was indeed one of the most devine Italian lyric tenors ever.

I just don't like the later commercial "shows" - not that I think he wanted them either - but apparently it's all about money these days ....

  • This is a real treasure!

  • What a voice he had, just pierces the very depths of my soul. Love you, Pav, R.I.P.

  • Nor me- the three tenors shows left me cold and the Pavarotti and Friends recordings just make me cringe.

It was good of him to humiliate himself for charity, though. I would have just sent a check if it were me.

  • This is sublime...fucking awesome (I used the f-word just to check the Audio Preview...and it works! hahahahah)

  • I will look forward to it, ta..

  • It is quite good, Pavarotti always sang the Verdi Requiem well, but I really don't like Muti's conducting... He didn't have that amazing musicality and interpretation of the music that von Karajan had. I have a (fairly rare I think) in house recording of the Requiem with Price and Pavarotti with Solti conducting in 1975, it is breathtaking; I'll try and upload the Ingemisco sometime.

  • Thank You so much for sharing this, I sent out Ave Maria and pictures on my myspace site to celebrate the great mans Birthday, wish I'd had this too, wonderful :0)

  • Bellissimo brano cantato con grande bravura,

    la voce meravigliosa. Walter.

  • Luciano is,was and will be ever a rare gen in these last times of lyrical decadence!

    Nina

  • Still he records very well the opposite of voices like Tucker or Del Monaco who did not record well especially in the studio, this is wonderful and yes I loved Schmidt as Wing says another voice that did record very well.
