This older version sounds almost upbeat compared to the 2011 Director's Cut which is devastating in its sadness. I wonder if Kate's age has anything to do with it - when you're young and your heart is broken, there's still love out there somewhere for you. But in the Director's Cut version you get the feeling that she's looking back over her whole life, and "never" really means never again. In any case I love Kate and both versions (although the 2011 is one of my favorites of all her songs.)
