In 1992 The Co-operative became the first major retailer to sell Cafédirect coffee, which went on to become one of the UK's very first Fairtrade brands. 10 years later, when coffee prices were at a 30 year low and many farmers could no longer cover the cost of production, we became the first supermarket to switch our entire own-brand coffee range to 100% Fairtrade. With The Co-operative brand you can enjoy a wonderful range of taste experiences, safe in the knowledge that the farmers have been paid fairly for the coffee you are drinking.
Colombian quality
The remote farmers of Colombia supply some of the best quality coffee in the world. In the highest reaches of the Andes Mountains 1,200 such farmers, who make up the Aguadas Coffee co-operative, have been supplying us with coffee beans since 2003. The benefits of Fairtrade can be seen across the Aguadas community; from new farming equipment to a quality assurance laboratory that ensures only the very best beans go into The Co-operative brand.
