@ninjastorm Which is why I can't wait to start studying it

I really enjoyed this film, I these day of shihan, hanshi, soke, kancho and all the other self appointed titles that the make it up as you go along brigade, its good to see a true martial artist. I was very lucky to study under the instruction of Dr Lee Ah Loi for over twenty years. Although it was Tomiki Aikido. Sadly I did not have the time to study Iaido or Jodo in any depth.

What Ryuha is this? I study MJER myself. Still a baby at it though. Won't see a shinken for a couple more grades. I'm only a yondan. Love the vid though.

@Saavykaas she is currently the highest rank outside of japan in muso jikiden eishin ryu. . . in other words yes she passed

@actmasterkings Saying "Sensei Coach" is kind of redundant since sensei is the honorific title that covers teachers, coaches, artist etc.

What song was that at the beginning?

In addition, this woman is a fine example of Iaidoka, particularly foreign ones like myself. 7th dan in any of the Budo is nothing to sneeze at and I hope she was able to pass.

That being said, "Samurai" is now as defunct a position as "Roman Gladiator". Some jobs are simply no longer hiring. Doesn't mean their traditions don't continue, doesn't make their lives and principles invalid and not worthy of study. But don't desire to be Samurai, because you cannot.
(it is fact that Samurai family descendants remain, but the castes and status were abolished over a century ago, so this is a legacy status like being descended from any other historically notable lineage)

@MZinzins "Samurai" was a status of the Buke noble caste of pre-Meiji (more or less) times. The Buke consisted of men and women, children and adults. "Samurai" is gender-specific to males, like "brother" or "father". Perhaps loose usage of "Samurai" at the time toward an "onna bugei-sha" (women martial artists who employed their skills just like men) might have appeared, but it would be colloquial. Female warriors who fought in wars did exist, however, but were not called "Samurai" officially.

Japan is a lovely country to visit although strongly advise going with someone who knows the language and country well to really appreciate the culture. Wish you well and thank you for support.

The Shinken (live blade) was made specially i Japan for the grading on the same basis as Fay's 16th Century koto bizen blade. The sword is much longer than the koto blade being 2.4 shaku.
