Congratulations to Pikesville VFC member Kevin Larrimore, who completed the Firefighter Combat Challenge on Saturday, October 3rd at the Baltimore City Fire Department Thrill Show. The Challenge, annually held at various sites, attracts hundreds of firefighters from municipal fire departments in the United States and Canada as well as international departments from several countries. The Challenge seeks to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate the profession's rigors to the public. Wearing "full bunker gear" including breathing apparatus and helmet, pairs of competitors race against themselves, their opponent and the clock simulating the physical demands of real-life firefighting. Firefighters perform a linked series of five tasks including climbing the stairs in a 5-story tower while carrying 50 pounds of firehose, hoisting, chopping, dragging an attack hoseline and aiming it accurately at a target, and rescuing a life-sized, 175 lb. fire "victim" and dragging them to safety.
Just FYI this competition is modeled after the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge but is "harder" than the official one due to setup limitations.
