I am soooooo glad I watched this 'cus I thought that the drowning thing was a flashback and the kids brain couldn't take the reality of him being killed by the "not-zombie-zombie" version of his mom so it reverted back to a past memory of when she had saved him instead. Ok so he was going to die that's what the Exit meant...
