The John McCain campaign fired back Thursday [08-21-08] at comments made by Barack Obama over the presumptive Republican nominee's memory lapse about the number of homes his wife owns.
"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?" the McCain camp responded. "Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people cling to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who's in touch with regular Americans?"
The Republican presidential candidate's team said it is happy to engage Obama in a debate over wealth after the Democrat's camp released a hastily-produced attack ad criticizing McCain for admitting that he's not sure about how many houses he and his wife, Cindy, own.
McCain's admission came in an interview posted Wednesday [08-20-08] on the Politico Web site in which the Republican candidate was asked about his and mega-millionaire wife's properties.
"I think — I'll have my staff get to you," McCain said. "It's condominiums where — I'll have them get to you."
Newsweek estimated this summer that the couple owns at least seven properties. But apparently they're all owned by his wife, her children and trusts or companies they control.
McCain sources told Fox News that that's part of the reason he had difficulty answering the question — because the properties aren't technically his.
The McCain campaign released a response ad late Thursday [08-21-08] playing up the link between Obama and convicted felon Tony Rezko, who was also an early backer of the Illinois senator "infanticide" Obama.
"Barack Obama knows a lot about housing problems," the narrator in the ad says. "One of his biggest fundraisers helped him buy his million-dollar mansion."
The Obamas, who earned $4.2 million last year, own one home worth $1.65 million, which they bought in January 2005 with an attractive mortgage rate.
Cindy McCain had a total income of $6 million, according to her 2006 federal tax returns. She has not released her 2007 returns, which she files separately from her husband. McCain's tax returns showed a total income of $405,409 in 2007.
Cindy McCain, whose wealth from her family's beer distributorship is estimated to be $100 million, seems to be the real estate entrepreneur in the family, but it has caused her headaches. On June 30, a trust fund of hers paid $1,743 in overdue property taxes on a condominium in La Jolla, Calif., outside San Diego. The condo was scheduled to go in default if not paid by July 1.
Obama does not have any terrorist friends. Socialist, Marxist? A perfect capitalist society is anarchy. No government etc. Don't get me started with socialism.

filmmanvick16,
You've got to be kidding. All of the politicians on both sides are rich. What do you have against John McCain marrying a beautiful woman who comes from a wealthy family? Good work, John! He's a man of integrity.
If B.O.'s lips are moving, he's lying. He has taken more money from his socialist, marxist, terrorists friends. One, Tony Rezko has been charged with 16 counts of fraud - playing pass the bucks under the table together with B.O. They both deserve prison!

In 2002, Obama was the only one that voted against providing aide to abortion survivors. Now he calls anyone who quotes him a "liar". Search YouTube video for "watch?v=ttF8s5XGVDw"
How do you properly describe a lawmaker who would condemn the child survivor of an abortion by permitting doctors to refuse that child, once born alive, potentially life-saving medical treatment and nutrition?
A number of things come to mind. Mr. President isn't one of them.

All across the US, the cost of living is greatly disproportionate to wages, & people are in despair. It's an attempt to focus on the idea that he's out of touch with what is happening in the US economy & resultantly in the homes & lives of most Americans. The fact that he owns 7 homes, but wasn't even sure about the #'s, reveals this. It's this, combined with recent statements about the strength of our economy, that so many find appalling & to be seated in denial of the situation in our country.

i don't understand how the number of houses a guy owns has suddenly become so relevant. since when does this conversation get more news coverage than the debate over health care?

I use to live in Hawaii. Yes you are right, there is no private beaches in Hawaii by state law.
And on another note, some people who are really poor and struggling in Hawaii have million dollar houses in today's market. In the past, they paid a small fraction of that, but again, in today's market, their houses are inflated. Their are houses that look like shacks and messed up that are million dollar homes. I know this because my in-laws own such house in Hawaii and they are struggling.

"I'd love to see a point where it is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary. But certainly in the short term, or even the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade, which would then force X number of women in America to [undergo] illegal and dangerous operations." - John McCain (1999)
Need I say more?

There are no such things as "private beaches in Hawaii," and Obama's 1.6 million dollar home can hardly be considered a mansion. Look at it, it's just an upper middle class home that is no much larger than mine.
