This is the first of a number of songs I will be uploading in the hope that other folks will want to sing them too - in church, on albums, whereever. This is a Christmas song.
See the child in the manger sleeping -
dead of night and the lamp burns low.
In the corner Joseph's snoring.
Mary's keeping watch alone,
thinking on the shepherds' visit,
all their talk of angels' song
and the words that rose within her
when she stood in Elizabeth's home...
and she magnifies the Lord, and her spirit leaps within.
A humble maid from a humble town
to God her Saviour sings.
In the corner Joseph wakens - "how's the baby, Mary love?"
Hearing wing beats as he rises, in the rafters spies a dove.
"Mary, Mary, I've been dreaming of our baby as a man,
speaking peace and bringing healing
with the touch of his calloused hand...
and I magnified the Lord, and my spirit leapt within.
A humble man from a humble town
I woke to hear you sing.
"Joseph love, our little baby also brought with him a sword.
Much that he will cleave apart will never, never be restored".
In the east the darkness lightens, Joe helps Mary from the floor.
the morning star seems caught in the branches
of the tree outside the door...
as they magnify the Lord, and their spirits leap within.
A humble maid and a humble man
to God their Saviour sing.
