Operational vehicles: we will clean up our operational fleet

TNT owns about 16,700 pick-up and delivery cars, vans and trucks, which make up 28% of our CO2 emissions. In 2005, we initiated a programme called "Driving Clean" to clean up our operational fleet. Planet Me takes this effort one step further.

From now on, we will only buy vehicles that meet the highest environmental standards. We intend to engage in technological developments through strategic partnerships, explore opportunities for new technology and fuels through pilots, and design a clean fleet strategy with the help of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

These actions will allow us to reduce our CO2 and other vehicle emissions.

Our commitments:

* Start a quest to become a zero emission transport company, an ambition that applies to all our operational line haul, collections and delivery vehicles worldwide. We do recognise that we will have to comply with local country constraints, which influence the availability, choice and economics of fuel-efficient technologies.
* Purchase only vehicles that meet the highest environmental standards.
* Reduce kilometres and avoid driving empty trucks by optimising our road network.
* Explore opportunities for new technology and fuels through pilot schemes.
* Encourage our fleet managers worldwide to enhance their fleets' performance, with the support of the UNEP.
* Teach our drivers new driving behaviours.
* Adapt our current fleet with emission-reducing devices.

TNT's operation vehicle strategy builds on five pillars:

* Networks
* Behaviours
* Technology
* Fuel
* Subcontractors
