z and a at same time, if you want to do it multiple times, hold down z and press a every time you hit ground

that side flip is a fucking sick move.. i need to try it and the backward long jumping 5 stars nice

The sideflip was one of the best I've done. I didn't do a jump dive for the star because of the pole infront of the star. When you do the Z+B move, mario doesn't grab the pole so I can just go past it to get the star.
However, if I managed to land on the left or right side of the platform, I could probably do a jump dive beside the pole to get the star and that might be faster. Worth a try.
