ShowYourWorking - Yes, the general intention was clear but I was not sure about exactly what the first few words were. I understood him better than Stan but less well than you did.

The older German does mention surrender although Stan, whose understanding of their German through his Yiddish is far from perfect, says he did not . When the usually sensible Stan blunders, mentioning that he is Jewish, the German says something like "He'll strike me dead! How are we supposed to surrender to a Jew?"
