Mrs. Rivera took our kindergarteners to visit the tidepools at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach, California. We saw so much: hermit crabs, harbor seals, sea anenomes, starfish and sea urchins. It was a magical day! Thank you, Mrs. Rivera!

Special thanks to Darren Raleigh for his kind permission to use this beautiful performance of "Carolan's Quarrel with the Landlady" on the celtic harp.

Darren's CD, "Silverwheel," is available at

We first heard his music on Marc Gunn's Irish and Celtic Music Podcast, and this tune quickly became my daughter's favorite. When I asked her why, she said, "I just love it!"

  • @yogatoes Thank you for your comment and your warning. We've only visited the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve twice, but it's certainly one of the most amazing, beautiful places we have ever been. It would be an awful crime and a terrible pity if we collectively "loved" it to death, but it's easy to see how that will happen without proper care and oversight.

It's incredibly irresponsible of the Board of Supervisors to abdicate their responsibility to protect and manage this precious refuge.

  • On busy low tide weekends over 2000 people per day visit the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve tide pools. Paths are worn down in the reef due to heavy foot traffic. Only one or two County employees are on duty during busy low-tide weekends The Fitzgerald Marine Reserve is designated as a protected reserve and that requires appropriate stewardship. In 2011 the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors closed the County Parks Department. The lack of County management at the FMR is an ongoing problem.
