Musique concrète - Can you guess what sounds were used?

Answer: Construction noises.

The sound editor software Audacity was used to make this musique concrète. A free version of it can be downloaded at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ You don't have to only use this software for musique concrète; it can be used for editing any kind of music. Let your imagination go wild =)

This is how I achieved the sound to my musique concrète: I recorded construction noises from a rather far distance using my laptop microphone. This probably accounts for the rusty sounds and why some of the sounds don't sound like construction noises at all. I took two recordings, and then I looked in closely to them to see what bits I liked. I then looped those bits, and all in all I combined four different layers of sounds. If you listen carefully, you can tell that my song is symmetrical; at the halfway point, my song is the same. The way that I liked to do it was to build up the sounds, then build them down. I made this song for a visual arts class I took, and I thought it was a fun project to do so I decided to share it with others. I'm just a beginner at this stuff, so I bet if you try it out, you can come up with something much better =)

  • John cages definition of music: Music is the sound around us.

  • @JohnF30Music It depends, was that moment intended? If it was the yes, it can be music. What makes this different than any other song? He put together sounds but instead of guitar and drum he used found sounds. Just because it isn't a radio single doesn't mean its not music. Some of us really like ambient songs like this.

  • I found it interesting. I have long know about Musique Concrete, and been interested in the idea. Some people who don't think of this as valid music expression probably would not like a group like Savage Aural Hotbed (whom I really liked when I heard them.)

  • I now realized... I made musique concrete as a child. On a computer, using just microsoft recorder. Then saved it on discettes. If musique concrete even is possible using computers.

I really wish I could listen to those pieces now. As a child I considered it just "playing around" and when I became teen I considered them rubbish, and I think I erased it... What a fool!

  • unfortunately this is music, cuz music is the art of the combination of sounds

  • @opedroefeio This was the first ever sound sampled track!

  • dog barking , a printer and a wacko who decided to distort and come up with this?

  • @cobei12 No, his definition of music is; Music is organized sound. He did believe though that there was no such thing as silence because all of the sounds around us.

  • Music is ordered sound - in this case ordered by a composer using a computer and recorded sounds as the main instrument. John cage was happy to listen to sounds ordered by the rhythm of nature or the busy streets of the city.

Melody, Harmony and Rhythm are very narrow terms used in defining certain aspects of certain types of music. Besides this piece has quite an interesting melody, harmony and rhythm - if you expand your expectation of what constitutes those terms.

  • that's tight .... no, I woould never aceppt that this is not the music, MUSIC is something that makes an emotion using sound!

  • Subjectivity is key here.
