Yes, the combo is weak and I personally never thought it was good enough for the Pro Tour, but the protection and tutoring abilities in the extended card pool compensate for the weakness of the combo. Transmute spells, Chalice, etc. all give the deck a heavy arsenal of tools to make it powerful enough to Top 8. I do agree though that Kibler/Rubin's Punishing Fire combo is far superior and much, much less obvious and n00bish.

They're about a year or two ahead, but yes, they could have/should have had the foresight to see this. However, the results of the Pro Tour show the combo is strong, but not unbeatable.

wotc is up to things 5 or 6 years ahead! hell, they might've been done with zendikar by the time dark depths was spoiled and R&D was just like lol!
