Here is a really nice guitar synth setup using the Analogue Systems rs35 module along with 5 other A.S. modules. The rs35 module does a remarkable job of turning the guitar's pitch into CV (control-voltage). There is no MIDI involved in this setup.

The rs35 module is a frequency (or pitch) to voltage converter. It can turn virtually any sound source into "1 volts per octave" allowing you to control an analog synthesizer.

Roger Cordell plays a Strat, first into a Barber Electronics TonePress compressor pedal for improved sustain. The output of the TonePress goes to the low pass filter section of the A.S. rs110 Multimode filter, which rolls off the higher frequencies. This improves the tracking of the rs35.

From there we run the audio into the rs35 'Frequency In'. The rs35's voltage out goes to the rs95 voltage controlled oscillator. We're using various modules to alter the oscillator sound including the rs100 Low Pass filter, the rs120 Comb Filter, and the rs290 voltage controlled digital delay/sampler.

Finally, here is a practical, fairly easy way to play your analog synthesizer with a guitar. Rad!

  • I might sound like a complete noob when saying this, but I'm guessing this system is monophonic? How accurate is the tracking on it?

  • @RekkiMekki Yes, it is monophonic. The tracking is perfect.

  • amazing. Isn't this basically what the ARP avatar was supposed to do ? Why did it take till now to make this happen?

  • @jaikwillis This is what the Arp Avatar hoped to do (but didn't). Why did it take so long? Analogue Systems wanted to create a module that could accurately turn pitch into voltage. They spent time and resources to get the rs35 pitch to voltage module made.

  • what equipment did you use in this??

  • @gopherbobz yeah, the basic idea of modular is to start off slow, which means you'll just get one thing of every basic and then evolve.

things you need to get a basic tone out of this: the rs35, two filters (one before it to improve tracking, one after the osc to alter the sound), an oscillator (doepfer makes nice n cheap ones, also you can get their filters for not much money) and a vca (the "amplifier") this you can run just like normal into your guitar amp :)

  • @retrocareermelted dude, its modular, which means you can just buy a compressor, two filters, a vco and a vca and the rs35 and you'll have a blast and it's gonna be somewhat 800 euros :)

  • I've almost considered getting something like this for my bass. What would be the minimum amount of modules to get a sound out of it? I ask because since its modular other things can be added and it looks like the 'recommended' setup runs a bit over $1000. It would be nice to start less expensive then add modules progressively building?

  • friend of mine picked up a fairlight voice to CV and midi for dirt cheap and sold it for $800 on ebay. the technology has been around but only a handful of units were ever produced. this thing was absolutely sick. you could modulate pitch AND expression by opening and closing your mouth more or less. just plug in a reqular mic or guitar. the thing was sick and he should have kept it.

  • i would totally get one of these if it werent 8000 dollars hahah

  • Damn I... really think I... need this...
