maybe you should be the one to exploit it

I really enjoyed this recording. However, I am surprised that it's supposed to have been recorded in 1956 - it's by far the clearest sounding recording from the 50s I've ever heard.
Bravo anyhow!

@nikolaimedtner I agree with abidoful. The first theme is seriously rushed through here. But otherwise there are some really cool ideas with this interpretation

@abidoful it's supposed to be tranqillo in character. I think it's also marked piano but that certainly isn't captured or aimed for here. In terms of what Rachmaninoff meant for, the first theme isn't played with the tranquility it needs. I think that's what you mean.

I agree. nikolai, thanks for uploading though. It is one of the best on the you-tube.

@abidoful Like what?.....

at 8:00... the plucking is absolutely gorgeous. A beautiful and clenching way to end the first movement. As a pianist, I completely feel the piano accomanied the Cello immaculately. I'm in awe.

I enjoy this rendition very much ;3

I'd disagree. I feel that in a sense his rendition of the final movement is the high point of the sonata (despite masterful and gorgeous playing throughout the work). In particular, the reprisal of the lyrical second theme of the 4th movement is sublime; intense, passionate, and sung like no other cellist has sung it before.
