Mint condition '81 xr500R..
Reed valve head... snappiest thumper i've owned.
pulls like a freight train, climbs vertical hills at idle..

blowing smoke because the previous owner 'topped up' the oil before i
picked it up.. first time i started it. fixed the prob 5min after the vid.

as usual i apologize for the shit audio. it sounds beefier than my old TT i assure you.

  • Great bike. I have 2 of those, love them.

The blue smoke is most likely from dried out valve stem seals. $10 for parts but you have to take the head apart!!

Be careful when you start it, not sure you follow the safe procedure. You could get hurt bad. Do a search on YT for "How To Kick Start A Honda XL500R Or XR500 Motorcycle"

  • @Ericf318318 oil was about 200ml over-filled from the previous owner.

not hard to start.. prime it, set it up and kick it..

  • -yeah nice bikes! love them- now ive got also 2 of them- only problem to get orig. parts here in europe!

    greets pw

  • Great!

It might not be hard to start, but it will take only one kick back to send your foot up to the handlebar at light speed, place a whole in your leg and put you on crutches... Have had the bike for 29 years and 8 months, ask me how I know that ... :)

    Have fun and ride safe.
