白光 - Bai Guang hit from 1950 Greatwall Label - 78rpm record played on HMV163 gramophone. Stunning ! It is non electric - totally hand windup. The sound is acoustically reproduced - the real sound!! Loud and clear!!

I HAVE ABOUT 1000 OLD MANDARIN SONGS ON 78RPM FORMAT. I COLLECT THEM OVER THE YEARS AS A HOBBY. IT IS GREAT FUN PLAYING ALL THESE VINTAGE RECORDS ON MY HAND WINDUP GRAMOPHONE. THE SOUND IS REALLY AMAZING -CLEAR AND INTIMATE.

  • Where did you get the Bai Guang 78 rpm?

  • YES it is very possible to remake this type of gramophone again. The most important part of the gramophone is the soundbox where the vibrating diaphragm is located. The spindle and horn can be easily overcome.

Provided the record companies can reissue these 78rpm format records then it is pointless to make new gramophones. Old 78rpm records are getting hard to get and they are prohibitively expensive. Some records go for nearly $1000 each. I have sold one for nearly that amount on Ebay!!

  • Wow -- This is really cool: I just realized that you are an Engineer! Previously it was my dream to be an engineer, so that I could design audio stuff like this, and instruments too: I love sound! But I gave it up... Have you ever thought of designing new 78 players?

  • I acquired this HMV 163 gramophone here in Melbourne, Australia. It is in pristine condition, almost MINT. I have 3 gramophones as you can see in the background.

This gramophone has a double bend internal horn inside the

chamber. It provides a longer distance for the sound waves to travel and formed before it comes out of the horn. The sound is superb - very loud and clear. Vocally it is unbeatable!

  • Where did you get that 78 player??!!!
