This video appears to show irrefutable proof that Time Warner Cable in NYC is rigging its internet speed tests to cover up its poor performance. We conducted this test several times before making this video and were able to produce similar results. The test shows three independent speed tests online showing our download speed between 2-6 Mbps, while Time Warner's test mysteriously registers speeds above 25 Mbps. Something's not right.
(As a note, day-to-day internet usage confirms that the independent speed tests are farily accurate, as we often have trouble watching YouTube videos, streaming music or staying reliably connected to our office networks.)

Context:

In early summer 2010 we began subscribing to Time Warner Cable's new wideband internet service, which promised speeds of up to 50Mbps down. We have been consistent disappointed with the service, as it consistently fell well below that mark (as you can see in the video.)

We have had Time Warner out for service several times. We have called dozens of times. We have filed complaints with the local Better Business Bureau. Ultimately, we feel like we have no recourse -- there's no viable competitor in the NYC area.

Discovering that it now appears that Time Warner is purposefully misleading its customers only serves to rub salt in the wound.

  • I have the 30/5 mb package and with the latency on just tryin to watch videos is crazy!! On 30 I ws assuming my computer would levitate after switching from Verizon's 7mb and I honestly see no difference. i have called them so many times and 3 tech visits in a week of service with them. Worst is they keep on doing speed tests but who cares if a simple flash videos takes forever 2 play and 1gb of download takes 3hrs!!!

  • Try using a newer computer?

  • Move to brooklyn or Queens: Verizon FIOS and Optimum will love you!

  • Does anyone else have TimeWarner cable? They are officially the WORST service ever. I have an UNLIMITED wifi on data card and EVERY MONTH I get hit with overage charges. I use less then 1Gig of data a month so I am not breaking the "unlimited" usage of 3Gig per month. I spend 3 hours a month on the phone trying to correct the same problem. I told TimeWarner I would be posting this to all my social media sites until they can get this right. Time Warner Sucks #worstservice

  • The only test you did that was on the Time Warner network was the last one. All the others are off their network. Its like someone having dial up on a game server. Just because you have a 50x5 connection you can only download from them at the up speeds that they have. If you think TWC would rig a speed test you are crazy. That would be a BIG NO NO in the FCC world.

Hope you figure out the issue. You could also do a throuput test to the RR DNS server

  • @GoldenSpoons I had this same issue download the cablenut application and select your speed; it will resolve the problem. Using Win7/Vista would also fix the issue.

  • You do realize you need to tweak your TCP/IP settings in Windows XP to actually get speeds above 20mbps? There is an optimizer out there that will do that for you.

  • You realize each of your speed tests is coming from a different server which will provide significantly different results than each of the others, and from themselves if you run them multiple times. This is because your connection doesnt always use the same path to talk to the server your transmitting to, even when downloading one file; packets of that file can easily take different routes.

This video has absolutely ZERO proof of rigging. JUST sayin. -______-

  • I find it funny I ran the same speed tests you used on my TWC extreme connection and all showed the same, which was between 29 and 30 Mbps down and 4 to 5 Mbps on the upload here in Austin, TX so I thing its something on your end or between you and the hub your connecting to. Might want to do a trace route and see if you are getting an pack loss.

  • time warner is a joke i got time warner and im not getting what i pay for buts the only high speed isp in my area so i cant switch to anything else better like verizon fios
