My jaw dropped in horror when you started swirling the toothpaste all over the record, label and all!! Toothpaste is comprised of at least 50% abrasives. You DO NOT want to be scrubbing the microscopic grooves of records with any kind of abrasive! There are record-cleaning solutions available that have been developed by chemists and do not damage the grooves, and special super-fine brushes that can actually get down into the grooves. Tap water is also bad, but that's the least of your problems!

its not a good idea using tap water.. better use distilled water or demi.. water holds strong calcium

over the year's I have cleaned lot's of records this way and have found it to do a very good job of geting them to play better

agree ! Toothpaste contains polishing particles! So this will grind all those fine treble waves off the grooves... Remaining will be a blurry sound lacking clearity and treble including a severe level of noise caused by irregular abrasion along the groove.

@berndpfe the only way to find out if Toothpaste is good at cleaning a record is to try it for your self as the sound in the end is always beter then what it was before you cleaned so when you have tryed it you may end up knowing what you are talking about but as for now you don't only way to find out is to try it for you self and see how great it works

Don't ever use toothpaste or hard toothbrush since all this will damage the grooves and result in loss of treble sound !! Never use handsoap, showering cream or else in that way. Only use: deionized carbonate-free clean water, some drops of solvent/tensides. Pipe/drinking water will leave stains of carbonate and therefore produce noise!

methylated spirits evaporate water very quickly so when I clean records with tape water
they are then treated with methylated spirits to quickly evaporate the tape water off the record and its very rare that I get a stain on a record and all of my records are cleaned before they are play cleaned with methylated spirits as will dry very quickly been records this way over 20 years or more

@berndpfe Methylated spirits can be used as cheap and safe fuel for camp stoves or camp lanterns. It makes a clean fire, easily extinguished with water and safe to transport without special security precautions. Denatured alcohol can be used as a cleaning agent, scratch remover and for cleaning electronic equipment. Woodworkers use methylated spirits to make shellac, a natural clear-coat or glaze for furniture and other surfaces that are normally varnished

i'm speechless
does this actually work for you?
I tried cleaning with a very soft dish sponge similar to a paint sponge pad and some perfume and dye free dish biodegradable dish soap in the sink, and noticed that on about 10 percent of the records cleaned I lost a bit of the sheen in some spots.
It's hard to imagine if a sponge did that to my records what toothpaste and a toothbrush would do.
Are you losing any sheen from your records with this method?

@djs259 well all of my records get cleaned with method no I don't lose any sheen on them and I have been useing method for over 17 years and the dish sponge I use is amade from foam now not all toothpaste's have abrasives in them there one called close up its like jel and I have tryed a tooth brush not a good plan only use a sponge
