Safe Streets East is a program partnership between Baltimore/Washington-based Living Classrooms Foundation and the Baltimore City Health Department. Safe Streets is a public-health campaign aimed at decreasing the number of shootings and homicides in targeted East Baltimore neighborhoods. While Safe Streets holds shooting-response gatherings whenever there is a shooting in the targeted neighborhoods, the goal of this initiative is not to be reactionary, but to prevent shootings from happening in the first place. In many instances, this means intervening and mediating disputes among gang members or drug dealers, or canvassing the streets with an ear to the ground, mitigating escalating situations. Safe Streets is a positive resource for the community, hosting events such as job fairs, picnics, and basketball games.
