Hi Grace, I have been to similar shows here in Mtl & have been disappointed I agree it would be great to have some sort of contest to get smaller design groups into these shows with viewers judging.
I hope you don't mind me saying this but when you are doing your video it is very nice to see you looking directly at the video but you look up way too much. Other than that great video, one of your followers, Barbara
I missed it this year as last year's show was flatter than past years. This is definitely not a designer-friendly show but is geared to big money buyers. The same is happening to SOFA, which may be why it also feels flatter. The talk topics were not that interesting. There are fewer giveaways, which do help stimulate ideas. To minimize cost for emerging designers, perhaps should be several free spaces, chosen by juried competition.
It was my first ICFF this year, but despite the excitement of my first show, I must agree with your assessment. Since I have IDS in Toronto as a basis for comparison, I should point out that IDS plays to the indie design community by providing a prototype showcase and mini booths (and people handing out Flyers to CUTMR at the IDS exit). Independent designers are a crucial presence for innovation, so a better partnership (if ICFF advertised offsite events?) would be a great step forward.
This is an interesting conversation. Off the top of my head I am thinking there needs to be a sponsorship component to these design fairs. If there is a designer who can afford and likes an indie designer maybe there should be collaborative element to design shows. There should be exciting wondrous designs everywhere and we know there are people who are creative and innovative thinkers. You should host a design show!
