Mike sent me a bunch of old recordings from his old band "Experimental BBQ". I asked him if I could do a jam vid with this particular track called "Smooth" and well here it is! :)

It's not perfect, lots of mistakes all over the place but I think the heart is there.

Sadly Mike and I have never really jammed in real life though we've collaborated on tons of stuff.

Anyway I hope you enjoy.

Mike Smith - Keys
John Simms - Drums
Eric Malm - Bass
Todd Warner - Guitar
Scott Morgan - guest lead guitar

(btw Todd served as a music editor for DBZ during the Cell Saga though he is uncredited)

Oh here's an mp3 of a preview I sent Mike before doing the vid: http://morganstudios.com/SmoothJam.mp3
(different take, different licks)

  • is that a fend strat?

  • @draciel80 Nope, it's a Washburn, kinda close to one of the Nuno Bettencourt models..but not quite. I do have a Strat though, see my "Shred this too" vid or "New Calm"

  • hey morganstudios do you know if mike smith is making videos or putting new music on youtube and by the way the dbz soundtrack was effing awesome

  • No he really hasn't (said he would at 1 point). b4 I sent him a copy of the Z Music album he really wasn't online at all. Now he's on Facebook mostly. He created a youtube account so he could comment on my old "Vanishing Credits" vid but he hasn't really done anything with the account.

One of his old bandmates (the drummer) posted some old recordings of Experimental BBQ and Mike sent me a link. Oh and thx man ! =)

  • Very nice indeed. Reminds me of Opeth flavor

  • thx man, my brother-in-law is really into Opeth. I'm not a fan of that particular vocal style but I really dig the guitar work. Some very cool riffs happening in that band.

I was just listening to your tune once again, as you stated about the vocal style of Opeth, which era are you on about with the band? in the recent times, they have really mellowed out in their vocals, and are starting to sing normal with some really clean mellow / haunting riffs. My question is, are you on about the old style type of Opeth ?

  • Wow, very nice. I love mellow stuff. 'Specially Mike's key work. Don't suppose you know if they've put up the original anywhere? Would love to hear it just for kicks.

Oh, and your jam is awesome too, as usual. :)

  • While it's good, I think he would need to ask BBQ permission first.

  • Hey scott, Great job! 5/5 :D You're Really good at the guitar playing! :D (Btw it's me Jochem110)

Off-topic : This vid is posted 1 day before my birthday lol

  • You should make this recording available for download, it's great

  • Your are right, there is alot of cool different riffs happening in their newer music. Please if you can, make, or play some more stuff like this I would really appreciate it. I found it hard to find music like this. I usually play synth with some mates in this style, but this, really just fits into my vibe. Thank you once again.
