E.S. Grant Mental Health Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia, is the sole psychiatric institution for a population of nearly 4 million. Although resources are limited and there are no psychiatrists or psychologists on staff, this small hospital is making a big impact on the mental health of the country. The Carter Center, in partnership with Liberia's Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, will use Grant Hospital as a training site for mental health nurses and physician assistants to build up much needed human resources for mental health care in Liberia.

The Carter Center, in partnership with Emory University, is committed to advancing human rights and alleviating unnecessary human suffering. Founded in 1982 by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, the Atlanta-based Center has helped to improve the quality of life for people in more than 70 countries.
