  • @cracks21229 in my opinion, there are no hard-and-fast rules in songwriting. you should always write/play what SOUNDS BEST to you! concerning inversions, they do alter the character of the chord a little - not so much that inverting a chord will ever make it sound "bad" - but some inversions sound better than others depending on individual circumstances. i think you should let your intuition guide you. learning to follow rules is easy. bending them to create something truly inspired isn't.

  • I like how you say inversions are optional in writing songs. I am a beginning piano player and I've got my regular chords shapes down good, but I read that for pop songs, it is best to keep the chords within the A notes (the one below middle C and the one above middle C) and the only way to do that is by using inverted chords. Any opinion on that?
