This is the best I can do to show what mental tics are like. They are actually extremely difficult to simulate.

- Please read and follow the instructions carefully.
- You will need the sound on at a reasonable volume. You will also need two small pieces of paper and something to write with.
- It is important to let the video load first to avoid stopping half way through.
- Although you can of course watch this as many times as you want, it will only really work once (if at all).
- Do not read the comments that other users have posted underneath the video as these may spoil what is in the video and thus make it ineffective.

I couldn't use my current mental tics as an example because they include the F-word. Instead, I have combined mental tics from when I was about 3-5 years old with ones from around 11-17 years old (they last a long time!)

None of my videos are for comedy or sympathy, although this particular one is partly for empathy.

If you have any (polite, respectful, genuine, mature) questions, please go ahead and ask and I'll do my best to try and answer them for you :)

  • I have the same kind of intrusive thoughts.... And some of mine involve cursing too! (I read info. to the side) lol. I recently had these intrusive thoughts that every time someone I like started talking to me I start cursing them out in my head. And it drove me nuts! But thankfully that one has been better lately. :) I also get the kind where my mind will keep saying a curse word while I'm trying to pray, so I have to always say my prayers out loud now...

  • @Kristiniskool: I get that while trying to pray too. I still pray in my head but quickly apologise and continue. I know that God knows I'm not swearing at Him or even doing it deliberately.

  • Is it usually colors that you have in your head?

Do you think that could be in part due to synaesthesia? (sp?) oh and i looked it up after watching that video and it seems like every six i come across is orange. i figured you noticed but i just thought it was strange.

  • It's not usually colours any more, no. Not as mental tics, anyway. I don't think they're linked to synaesthesia, but you never know.

About the sixes: do you mean you see sixes as being orange or do you mean lots of other people with synaesthesia have orange sixes?

If you mean the latter, there do appear to be interesting trends. For example A tends to be red in a lot of people.

  • i dont have tourrets but this was hella challenging still

  • That's the idea - it's supposed to help people without Tourette syndrome understand Tourette syndrome (and, specifically, mental tics) a bit better. I hope you found it interesting :)

  • thanks this has helped others feel how i feel. great video

  • that is a great example of what I go through all the time. No one understands why I can't study if they are watching TV, or talking, etc...

  • i have full blown tourettes, i got first four answers first time with interference, but even without it, i couldnt get last ones...guess i musta trained my mind well enough to get part of it atleast, thx tictionary, you did a great job on mental tics. Its such a challenge, between the mental and physicals for me, so this was nice to see someone attempting to show how difficult it can be.

  • Hey I don't get this.... I have never heard of mental tics before. I found the joe shoes passage very difficult to comprehend. Does this suggest I have mental tics?

Thought it was like a sensory overload thing. Also with the silence leading up to the passage it coaxed me into concentrating with only silence.

As for all this talk about cursing during prayer is that a typical mental tic?

  • My six year boy was diagnosed with Tourette's this week. He also has ADHD. I am trying to learn everything I can to help him. It's so hard to imagine what it's like for him. This video gave me an idea of how difficult it must be.

  • very interesting indeed. . . first try i got 2 out of 6 and 2nd try i got 4 out of 6 lol..

i remember i used to have tics when i was a child . . such as biting my hand. . .or movement in my eyes and nose/mouth . . . but i dont have them anymore. . i guess i learned how to control them because at times they were embarrasing. nice vid.:D

  • the first time i got 5 written down and 2 right. the second time i got 6 and got 6 right.

this was interesting for me, to watch and learn. i love your videos, and how you are willing to put these things up to help people understand. (:

    woo! =]

  • I couldn't concentrate for anything!!! I got Andy as a name and that was all! Good god that would be hard to deal with!
