"Wading in the Velvet Sea"

Phish
October 20, 1998
Sessions at West 54th, New York, NY

Sleep#, Frankie Says, Ghost, Roggae, Guyute, Wading in the Velvet Sea, Driver#, Albuquerque*, Birds of a Feather, Piper, Taste**

Played for "Sessions at West 54th," a PBS series hosted by David Byrne (of Talking Heads). "Birds," "Ghost," and "Taste" were broadcast January 9, 1999 on the program, in addition to interviews with the band about fan taping and the Halloween musical costumes. #Acoustic. *Played (acoustic) while tapes were being changed; was not taped. **Quasi-encore: Phish had finished their written setlist (though skipping "The Moma Dance," which was on the list given to the cameramen) and had some time left ("Ghost" was only 10 minutes long). After a flood of audience requests (including many for Byrne to sit in), Trey said, "Okay, let's just play Taste," at Page's suggestion.

  • @ptrsrsn, me too...it's actually still really hard for me to listen to this song at all, even post-reunion, and i've still only listened to the coventry version once since the show. that was one of the saddest moments of my life, it was like a beloved family member had died. so glad they're back, and imo playing better than they have since big cypress!

  • The first time I heard this song I was driving home from a camping trip. My friend put it on while the sun was rising at 6 am. This song just reminds me of waking up and seeing the beautiful things in the world. We should feel lucky to be living on this earth and all its majesty. It's amazing how Phish can evoke those feelings in a simple melody.

  • there should be a love button on youtube sometimes

  • Fishman is tripping... 2:29

  • Trey is off in this one. The rest of the guys are right on it...Fishman is got it, Page is master of the boards, Mike drops the bassbombs! Great song!

  • So funny, Jason, I came here to start my post with, "This may just be..." It may just be the most beautiful song I know. At highly emotional times, some music works and some doesn't. This song is a blessing.

  • This may just be my favorite Phish song ever. My grandma died a few years and this song was the only thing, musically, I could stand to listen to.

Still chokes me up when I hear it, but I can't stop listening.

  • tease
