This Dominican/Puerto Rican family is a joke .. their kids don t even speak the language because of her stupid mother wanting them to be more american !!! now 16 years later they don t even understand how to say orange in Spanish... I dont understand the stupid ideology some Latino's familys have about not teaching them their parents' native language thinking they are not going to ever learn English .....

Native language would be relative, would it not? In other words, Spanish, at one time, was not the native language of the people in what is now called the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico. It is good to have the ability to speak more than one language but parents are not "stupid" for wanting their children to blend in better with the prevalent culture. Some of these children actually don't learn much English, and that disadvantages them in most of America.

@AfriSynergy You what You re telling is that us as human beings are not capable to learn more than one language ... even in USA a country where the second most spoken language is Spanish ? are you kidding me ... if me being a simple HS educated latino that came to america at the age of 17 and Iwas able to learn some English !! so why wouldn t a kid growin' up between 2 worlds learn 2 languages ? explain that to me please

The easiest way to explain it would be to suggest you go to certain areas of Miami or certain areas of Arizona. You will find youth who have been here for years and struggle with speaking English. It is difficult to be successful in the US where more and more technical skills are required without being able to communicate in the language of business in the US. What you were able to accomplish is good but don't make the mistake of thinking it is the same for others.

"latino" simply means "latin" in spanish. Thanks to the US census and their horrible attempt to redefine the term, we now have all kinds of people erroneously describing themselves as "latinos".

This entire series is aimed at the MTV generation.

Latin America is a diverse region. Southern Cone is primarily European. Central America is primarily indigenous and much is mixed interracially.

Like I said before, this series is aimed at the MTV crowd, people who don't know shit about US history, let alone Latin American history.

Even Geraldo Rivera is stating that he is a Latino. LOL. I guess all you have to do is have a Spanish last name, so I guess Emitt Smith is officially English! HA

@OnlyTheTruthSorry I agree. They should have pushed the Spanish language as a first language. They would have learned English in school and very well. That's what happened to me and I speak very fluent Spanish as well. Being bi-lingual is an amazing pro in life!

Growing up I din´t want to speak Spanish because I was ashamed, one lady told me ¨would you rather have 1 million or 2 million dollars¨ the answer is easy, that clicked and I started learning Spanish, now I speak Portuguese, learning Italian, French and Chinese this opened a whole new world and allowed me to understand other people better and learn how much we have in common which is way more than what we don´t

Being an immigrant child who had parents coming from Manglore, India. (They speak Konkani). My parents didn't want me to learn Konkani when I was young because English was more important...because school was more important. Now they regret it to. I'm trying to learn it, but the problem is their so little Konkani in my town and world wide (no movies, other people to speak it with, music, internet) , and all the Indians here are Malayalee. :(

@AfriSynergy what you state about youth in Miami not speaking English even though they have lived here their whole lives is completely false. Any young Latino in Miami who got at least part of his education in Miami will speak English. In fact, most US-born Latinos who grow up in Miami in exclusively Spanish-speaking homes will speak better English than Spanish b/c ALL education is in English.
