  • what length should a rafter be on a 12' wide shed with a 6/12 pitch with no over hang and full bearing?

  • xCochise

Like I said this video isn't about finding lengths. That's for another video ;-). THe answer to your question would depend on what type of roof was on the shed. If it were a gable the answer would be: 6' 8-1/2"

If it were a lean-to it would be13'-5"

Have have a pretty nice calculator on my site that will do this for you. Check it out.

  • just brilliant mate thanks

  • Thanks man!!...Great information, I appreciate it.

  • the 2/3rds method would just drop the entire roof down as compared to the full bearing method. If you have a ridge beam you would have to use the same method for the brids mouth at the peak.

  • I know and am sorry Joe passed away R.I.P. But can someone answer something for me. He showed 2 different ways of doing the birdsmouth. Wouldn't the 2/3rds method change the pitch by making it sit a little lower? I am new to all this so I was just wandering.

  • Thanks for spending the time to teach people these things!

  • Thanks Joe, great information ..

  • hey joe very impressive videos you clearly know your stuff and well explained, was wonderin how to calculate rafter length ,my method is to measure from wall plate to wall plate ,outside to outside then half that measure next i would set up a profile on site meaning i would use 2 rafters to form a giant square or L shape measure over the distance i had divided earlier and continue a line until it hits the rise i know this is an awkward way it does work but im ashamed i cant do it a simpler way

  • @joefusco1960 What was the name of the video for determining widths? Thats the only part Im having trouble with.

  • Thanks very good information .

  • Looks good man, you have the good big square with easy to read numbers. Couple things though, how can you stand those crappy wooden midget horses? How many 50$ sets of square locks do you lose on the job before just making a good pattern with some scrap lumber? Why not mention to people that roofs can have 2x8, 2x10, 2x6 all on the same house, so b/m height is a little more than using one or two handy methods. 6" bm height won't work if you use 2x6 for the little rafters, too little seat.
