Fiddling around with a Dulcimer

My father-in-law found this Appalachian dulcimer at a junk sale for a high price of eight bucks. I have no technique and I've only been messing around with it for a couple hours. This piece is an original, if you can call it a piece. Tuned to CGC (I had it tuned to DAD, but then I actually broke a string. This set is made out of cardboard and a piece of wood. It came with instructions of how to build your own dulcimer. Sounds pretty good for eight dollars!)

Any advice on technique/hand positioning would be greatly appreciated!
