To be honest, if I saw this on paper I'd think it stupid as well... leave it to Rowan Atkinson to make even the smallest thing funny!

What this sketch is about, what is the pertinent underlying comdeic value, philosophically or otherwise speaking, differs noticeably between the two main protaganists of this period piece of social commentary vis a vis: the making of the teleV.

The thing he underestimated was Rowan Atkinson, 1000 other people could have done this and it might not have worked. Rowan Atkinson can make me laugh with just the movement of a few facial muscles.

This makes me think of Rowan Atkinson's car accident (again a tree was the culprit!). Luckily, it was soft enough like this to prevent complete disaster. What amazingly versatile talent he has!
They really must release the complete Not the Nine O'Clock News series on DVD!

What I love about this sketch is that the bump into the tree isn't a huge, comedy pratfall, it's very natural. Makes it ten times funnier!
