  • I discovered this unknown gem while looking for a different song. Glad I did. We had a double-LP of the Irish Rovers, but this song wasn't on it. They were something else again.

  • Thank you for posting. The first time I heard this song was in 1979, broadcasted on tv, when they did a concert in Vancouver. It has been one of my favorite songs ever since.

  • They sang a good song about a "granny" and a reindeer. :)

  • @painnneck I have Irish relations, I think everyone does...your location says USA but you are Irish, when did you move away? I have had many good holidays over there in ireland...

  • @madmo32

10,000 Irish men dies in WW2 fighting with Irish regiments in the British Army.

I was stating a fact, nothing more. My facts are right.

388,000 British people died during WW2, including civilians in our bombed cities.

WW1 947,000 British people lost their lives, don't know how many Irish.

Anyway, great song, I used to sing it 33 years ago when i was a kid.

  • blackpoolmadteacher, you should get your facts right, many people from the island of ireland died in the 2nd world war, northern ireland was and is part of the uk and many people from the republic of ireland signed up to join many different uk regiments

  • This is an old Northern English song made famous by Brian and Michael.

The song was the "B" side of Matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs.

"Wrote it all along the gasworks wall" and "The war it cut the family down to more than half it's size" suggests the circa of the song too. Not many Irish lost their lives during the World War 2 as they stayed nuteral throughout it.
