My Dad was part of the 2/3 Independent Company and took part in this battle. I would just like to point out that this was not Kokoda. It was a different time and place.
@ozzyguy67 I read heaps of war books & recently finished Fitzy's book "Kokoda". Whilst the yanks did nothing there they stopped the Japs at many other tiny specks of land in the Pacific like Guadalcanal & Pelelieu. They were given a heroes welcome when they dry-docked at Melbourne & were hailed as the saviours of Australia. Why don't you read a book you ignorant twit before you start making such ridiculous assumptions about someone else who most likely knows a hell of a lot more war history.
Damien Parer was killed filming the marine invasion on the island of Pelelieu. As mortars were going off around him and the lead wasps were screaming around his ears he kept filming as 100's of brave marines were blown to pieces around him. He died doing what he loved & that was showing the world what a horrifyingly brutal concept that war really is. One of the best war doco makers ever. RIP.
I just started reseaching my grandfather's role in WW2 and it lead me to this film as he was in the 2/3 Aust Independent Squadron and Parer was with them documenting it in Salamaua..pretty full-on to think my Pop was there somewhere..
Narr mate, I'm not referring to Parer. He does great, and I was very saddened to hear of the manner of his death. It is the other voice over bloke that I'm referring to. Cheers man. Jonno.
I know your comment was over 6 months ago but i think its worthwhile telling you that the bloke is not a news reader but a war camera man his name is damien parer and was proberlly the best at what he done in the war, he wen to Nth africa and all over the pacific, he got killed while filming the marines somewhere in the pacific theatre.
