A lot of people have asked how I make the Black Ash Baskets. This may not be the best video I have ever seen .. however .. it is the best I could do .. on short notice. Please enjoy it.

Could somebody please tell me: Does this technique only work with black ash, or with every fresh ring porous wood that was cut in spring?

This works for Black Ash, Brow Ash , White Swamp Ash.

Other Hardwood species do not have the same qualities required to separate growth ring layers by pounding. Some of the other Hardwood species can be pounded off the log , however the materials become brittle and un-usable for basket making.

I was thinking about backings for bows or wooden inlays for knife sheaths...I have to try it with the german Ashs here.

That's an awesome video! I'll approve it for being on my channel. How long did you have to pound each spot on the growth rings before you could peel it away?

pound each spot once. overlap pounding the next spot . overlap pounding the next spot .. repeat the length of the log. rotate the log .. repeat until log is done. a couple zillion hammer strokes,
