GILBERT REMULLA: Promote SMEs, Education, and Tourism to Solve Poverty

NP says government needs to create 3 million jobs every year.
The Nacionalista Party (NP) through its standard bearer Manny Villar raised the need to put more government support to small and medium enterprises in the country to avert the growing unemployment that has reached 15 million this year.
NP spokesman and senatorial candidate Gilbert Remulla said more and more Filipinos are expected to lose their jobs in the coming years particularly the overseas Filipino workers because developed countries are still reeling from the impact of the global financial crisis.
He said strengthening the capability of small and medium businesses in the country has always been the priority agenda of the Nacionalista Party as its standard bearer, Manny Villar believes that the sector is the driving force of the Philippine economy.
"The local agriculture and industrial sectors have not been spared from the crisis and now face weakening exports and displacement of workers," said Remulla. "The bloating number of unemployed Filipinos is leading to increased poverty and hunger and high drop-out rates among students".
Remulla said SMEs comprise 95 per cent of businesses in the country more than 95 per cent of businesses and full government support should be given to them to allow them to provide more jobs in the coming years.
He said the government needs to infuse more funds to SMEs through micro finance system to enable them to expand businesses and create jobs here.
The Philippine Economic Society (PES) said over the weekend that around 15 million Filipinos are jobless and hold only part time jobs for a certain period. Most of them are OFWs who have been retrenched in most developed countries that were affected by the global financial turmoil in the last two years.
Dr. Fernando Aldaba, former dean of the Ateneo de Manila School of Economics revealed the number of jobless Filipinos as basis for policy formulation for the National Competitive Council (NCC). Aldaba is also the former president of PES.
The NCC was created in 2006 to help the government avert the continued decline of the countrys competitiveness rating.
Dr. Aldaba said at least 2.82 million Filipinos are totally jobless and are looking for jobs, while another 7.3 million are the underemployed who are working in low-paying jobs in the services sector.
The PES also said around 5 million returning OFWs have joined the ranks of jobless Filipinos in the last few years contracts.
Remulla said the government also needs to tap the country's tourism sector to raise revenues and create more jobs. "The island destinations of the Philippines should be promoted to attract tourists as well foreign investments to create more jobs for the local communities," he said.
He said "the Philippines is both rich natural resources and highly competent professionals and skilled workers which when tapped effectively can provide stable jobs in the long run".
