Yeh just before the famine in Ukraine the Anglo-Saxon countries stopped accepting russian gold in exchange for industrial equipment and only accepted crops, hoping that will stop the growth of the USSR, but Stalin decided to still carry his plan through, even if it meant risking famine. One thing foreigners seem to ignore, is that Russia has been always "closed" from the outside. The concept of |iron curtain", for instance, was invented by Goebbels and then applied by western countries. USSR wanted to trade with the west - most of the west said "no". USSR wanted to join NATO - the west said "no". USSR wanted a pact with western countries against Nazi Germany in late 30's - the west said "no". And that's only a few facts from the Soviet period.
