@15hmael I was under the impression that the majority of deforestation in third world countries was due to human development and or use of charcoal as an energy source not the paper industry
Germany produces now the same amount of electricity as The Netherlands use as a nation by subsidised solar panels. Remember how Rockefeller pushed Ford out of the ethanol market, in the Mid West by buying the alcohol prohibition. Ford had already a more than 10% car fuel market share with his ethanol business. Remember how Ford brought ethanol suitable T-Ford on the market, which could be switch from petrol to ethanol. The technology was already here. Many USA farms produced ethanol back then.
@Shanockdotcom With respect to my forest vs crop comment, I have not seen a Tree farm, however large companies like Weyerhauser still perform unethical forestry practices. What they call a tree farm is a plantation.I apologize for the red herring but, isn't always a moral issue when talking about forests?
@Shanockdotcom I thought the issue of economic growth was implied in my original comment and I ,incorrectly, inferred it from your reply.If I may paraphrase my original comment--Q:How could economic growth occur with sustainable US forest acreage? A:Through exporting deforestation. My inference from your reply-- efficiency of use will add to the increase in growth. I apologize for not being clear enough.
@15hmael If you're confused about what I said, it's because I didn't say anything about economic growth. We were talking about forest acreage. Stay on topic.
Have you ever seen timberland before? It's not exactly grown as a crop. Wikipedia for the term "Tree farm", read a bit about it and see the pictures. Lots of respect for the native species. But then, we weren't talking about the morality of using forests, either, only their existence, so please stop throwing red herrings.
@Shanockdotcom I'm not sure what you're saying. Economic growth (with respect to forest products) has increased primarily due to more efficient,sustainable farming practices? Also, there is a difference between a forest and a crop.Sorry, but you do realize there are other species on this planet that live lives of their own and don't consider themselves our resources?
@Shanockdotcom Yes I am affraid so. Venus project future by design. I BEG you to watch it. "You have to work, to make a living that's the way it is." No you don't! Work is beneath man when technology can take over 90 percent of all known labour.
@Strangepete It's not sustainable anyway, because even in the current system, the government requires you to pay taxes. In Stef's ideal world, there'd be no such barriers stopping you from trying, and noone stealing your food. Even then, it's still probably unsustainable once you grow too big and your members turn on each other due to labor inequality, but that's beside the point. What does it have to do with you calling Stef narrow-minded? because he "believes in money"?
@15hmael That's not entirely accurate. There's plenty of deforestation going on in the U.S., but the land is privately owned. Therefore, the lumber companies sustain their business by planting new trees, and they continue this cycle so that they'll be able to continue producing wood indefinitely. Wood is a renewable resource. Environmentally friendly too, since growing trees pulls CO2 out of the atmosphere. It's a classic example of private property rights protecting the environment.
@deadshepherd666 I agree.
