Paul Dacre, the Daily Mail's editor in chief, on Wednesday launched a staunch defence of the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) as he addressed the latest seminar of the Leveson Inquiry, which was set up in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal.

In it Mr Dacre said that over-regulating the press would "put democracy itself in peril".

Comedian Steve Coogan and Louise Mensch MP, a member of the culture select committee, joined Jeremy Paxman to discuss whether he was right, whether press self-regulation works and whether the tabloids are a necessary evil.

Steve Coogan is a very intelligent man with great integrity, I like him even more after this appearance.

Good lad Steve. Every now and again, we get a celeb who's got backbone. Keep it up.

It was a broadsheet for most of its life.

That's weird. I normally hate Steve Coogan for being a boring self-interested, ego-maniac whose comedy usually hinges on embarassing, boring, self-interested, egomaniacal characters. Here he actually holds himself in an intelligent, mature and articulate manner. It's a good job to defend yourself against snarling media pundit like Paxman's without falling into a tiresome fight over who's right.

The Daily Mail is a tabloid - I don't mean that as a statement of outrage - it classes itself as a tabloid and as far as I know it has never been deemed a broadsheet. It's a tabloid without the red top ... and it's read by scummy dirt-boxes from Cheshire.

The newspapers are going out of business not because of their content but because of their business model. The concept that ine has to go to a shop and buy a newspaper that they will throw out the next day (which isn't exactly environmental) is going to loose out to getting free news on tablets phones and traditional pc's. It's more environmental, it monetises through advertisement and its fundamentally cheaper as it ignores the printing process. That is the future

If we had a free press we could find out what happened on 9/11.

Did Coogan take notes for creating a suitable new girlfriend for Alan Partridge?

Just crucify any media outlet that breaks the law. Record fines, whole front page apologies, arrests, forced resignations, people being fired. Others will soon learn not to break the law.
