Low Same-Direction Reels

Lesson Type: Beginners

Prerequisites: Basic Spinning

Alternative Names: Watermill, hip reels, low turn, hip turn

This is the first lesson on the very diverse and essential range of moves called reels. Reels are basically just spinning the poi at various positions in the wall plane. Very simple, but may take some practice to get looking nice. A mirror or some form of instantaneous visual feedback is essential.

If you're finding them hard, just post a video response of yourself attempting them, and I'll help you out.

Enjoy,

  • ok so how long should it take me to master this?

i feel so akward doing this, i feel like im doing something wrong.

    keep practising ?

cheers for your tutorials though, they have been so helpful :D

  • @11littleflea11: How long it takes just depends on the person and how much time you're going to put into it. It's not particularly easy for most people, as you have to learn how to control the poi in a new plane, which can feel quite strange for some people. Just keep at it, it'll work out eventually.

  • Thanks for these tutorial video!

Actually these tricks tends to be really simple to me, just i can't practise it in front of the computer(only in the garden) but i usually learn a different trick lol... When i first started to do this i did something like 5 beat wave behind the back and i was wondering why can't i do it with 2 pois. Now i can do "this" but i just noticed that learned the butterfly low and butterfly high reel instead of the same-direction ones first.

    Any idea to memorize tricks?

  • Hey, there's no particular order in which to learn tricks, in fact, I know somebody who can do an anti-spin flower and hyperloops but can't even do low reels or a buzzsaw, crazy huh? As for memorising tricks, try writing them down after you learnt them with a brief description of what the trick is, or video yourself doing it so you know what it looks like later. I'm not sure if this answers what you're asking, let me know if this helps or not.

  • Again a superb video. I had thought myself past this step, but trying to just do the reels alone I discovered I still need a lot of practice with this particular move. The behind the back spin is what throws me off. I warp the plane every time. Do you have any tips to help with this?

  • Just practice, I recently went through all the reel combinations again to make sure I could do ALL of them, including behind the head and waistwrapped reels, and found that it was hard to maintain planes behind the body if I held that position. But through practice of just holding the position in the tough areas and just trying to keep my planes tight without changing the reel position, it got better. A mirror or some other point of reference is also very useful as you can't see behind you.

  • The whole fucking day I tried to do this and I'm just a 40% successful.

I know what's the problem, I must buy some looong sox and put a tennis ball in it, because I got a little bags filled with rice on a shoe laces, and it spins like shit!

BTW, your vids are cool . Keep it coming. V

  • Damn this move! Lol I can't do it! I hve no idea why. I can do moves in your intermediate videos like crossers, butterfly crossers, airwraps, and the "Thomas" but at this move I fail. Oh well, gotta keep practicing this one I guess.

  • GREAT videos... I couldn't do the reverse weave at all, saw your three beat weave turn tutorial earlier, now I can not only do the reverse weave but I can turn (almost) effortlessly as well... Don't ask why I looked at the turn before learning the reverse weave, it's just the way I am, I looked at the turn, looked at the particulars of the regular 3beat weave, and worked it all out in my head so =)

Thanks for all the great vids

  • I was watching a playlist of the band 'Low'. What the fuck is this?

  • I feel like I'm missing a step or something...

  • Your awesomeness is distracting ^^

  • Alright I'm having a litle difficulty with this. I can spin one poi while I switch the other one behing and in front of me but I can't for the life of me get both of them spinning in front and behind me at the same time..any suggestions?

  • thanks TONS man. without this video i would have given up completely, but now im sittin here making my own crochet poi so i can practice more(:

  • @Yavesguitar lol.. I usualy hit my balls :-S

  • I can't seem to get this no matter how hard i try which is really sad since I'm on to a lot more difficult moves otherwise. I've been doing hyperloops, orbitals, isolated buzzsaws, fountains, 5 beat weaves, split time thread the needle but this move still gets me every time....
